Gold digger hits shallow mine

Gold digger hits shallow mine

The saying that man is a social animal came into play recently in Abuja. A bush rat is known to sample different abodes before it finally settles down into one. An Abuja-based young bachelor launched a search-and-sample operation on single girls who were desperate for husbands in his neighbourhood, in his workplace as well as in his church. He was changing girls as frequently as though he was changing his boxers.

Eventually, the randy bachelor’s mission ended when he settled for the delectable daughter of a stupendously wealthy former minister. Aside from the beauty that the ex-minister’s daughter is endowed with, her sitting on a goldmine was another factor that could attract any suitor. It was believed that by the end of the search, the mercurial bachelor had sampled close to a dozen girls within a period of one year… an average of one girl per month.

The dashing bachelor was not the only one in the habit of running after rich women either for fun or marriage. In times past, men found it more dignifying to be the ones calling the shots at home as heads of the family. But what we see today are men playing the second fiddle to their spouses who are financially strong enough to pay house rent or own houses, pay the children’s school fees, feed and clothe them and meet all their commitments instead of the other way round. Some of the men are even far younger than their wives. This class of men would not mind calling a cow auntie just because they want to eat meat.

The courtship between the ex-minister’s daughter and her randy fiancé was not prolonged for fear (on the part of the fiancé) that other rival guys might spring a surprise and mess things up for her. The rush was at the behest of the former who is the last born and the only girl in the family of six.

To shorten a long story, the wedding took place. It was a society wedding back in the girl’s town and it became the talk of the town for a very long time.

But tragedy struck three months into the wedding when the girl’s father passed on. His death was unexpected and it was like he died intestate. After the elaborate burial, the family returned to Abuja. A few months after the funeral, the men in the family sat to decide who got what from the massive assets they inherited.

Unknown to the new couple, the men in the family had seen through their brother-in-law who they passed as a gold digger. Given his Casanova record, they believed the family wealth was the ultimate attraction rather than his love for their sibling. So, they shared the assets and cash among themselves, leaving their only sister in the lurch.

The sister was bitter about her being sidelined from their father’s inheritance. She pleaded with their mother to intervene in the matter but her brothers refused, insisting that going by their tradition, it was not her birthright to get anything as a woman.

Presently, things are not going on fine with the couple who now have to depend solely on their incomes from salaries which can hardly take them home. And since the marriage was built on a wrong foundation, which is materialism fueled by greed, it remains to be seen how long the gold digger would be able endure life devoid of comfort and riches.
